How Stuff Works
Introduction:
The system of how stuff moves or the material economy needs
to go through 5 steps. Also how people throw the things out all over without
sharing with other people, and how it affects the wild life. This paper will
describe the five steps of the material economy as mentioned following the
story of stuff(2007)
Extraction:
The first step which is extraction is
an act of extracting something. This is how they get oil from things. It’s like
getting juice from fruit. The bones that animals left and the things that
people use and throw, they extract them and get out the benefits from it.
Extraction can produce poisonous gas and it’s dangerous, it harms our future
generation because the women breathe that gas and feeds her child. The article
shows ‘’we’re using too much stuff, the processes by which we extract all that
stuff cause more damage and we’re not sharing the stuff equitably’’(The
Story of Stuff Project.2007).
Production:
The second step of this process is called production,
production is to create or made something from natural resources. In this step
the materials and the resources go in production and supply them with toxic
chemicals. Then it produces a lot of things that carry toxins. The consumer buy
it without knowing what they made it of or mixed with?. The products go to
schools, jobs and maybe it get into bodies. Toxic enter the body by the food
and it gets to women bodies and hurt the future generations because of the milk
that mothers feed their children from. Children is the most members of the
society that receivers the most poisons. Mothers should take cares of
themselves to transfer less percentage of the chemical toxins. That starts from
the government they should protect us and bring healthy productions.
Distribution:
The third step is Distribution, which
means selling as much as they can of the production that carries toxic
chemicals. The article shows ‘’ Distribution is the process of making a
product or service available for use or consumption’’(Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia.2013). The companies who produce put low and cheap prices
on their equipment or items .That all means the customers do not pay the real price of the
productions. Spend a lot of natural resources to produce and distribute, which
mean increase the diseases of asthma and cancer. They produce and distribute
all around the city and share more diseases and the consumers get damaged. The people
who works in this system in poor people they moved from outside to inside
country to live and make some money they have no other option.
Consumption:
The fourth step is use or
consumption, which means only buy things and waste money. A lot of consumers
buy things and throw them away, as much as they produce of new models, the
consumers hurry to buy the new one and throw out the old one. Low percentage of
people who keep things they buy and very rare that people share things with
others. The meaning of all this is people who don’t buy they don’t have a
value. An example of consumption is consumers care about fashion, what the
thing that let the consumers care about fashions is the fake advertising. The
article shows ‘’we need to step beyond our role as consumers and reclaim our
identity as engaged citizens in a democracy’’.(The Story of
Stuff Project.2007).
Disposal:
The fifth step is disposal, which is
when you get bored of something and you been used it long time ago just throw
away and don’t know where it will go and what will happen to this stuff. The
stuff that been thrown and wasted they burn it to get rid of it yah it’s ok but
the thing what it produce when you burn it?, a lot of disease and air
pollutions which will harm people and the natural life. The article shows
‘’Waste needs to be designed out of the system from the start-through cleaner
production’’(The Story of Stuff Project.2007).
Consumerism in UAE:
After the discovery of oil in UAE, UAE became one of the
richest countries in the world of oil and gas gallons or barrels. Some of the
people have calculated and studied about consumerism in UAE, the studies shows
that each person spends 21,576 Dollars in 2010. What government of UAE thinks
is to reduce the disposal of stuff. In addition in 2011 about 487,000 barrels
of petrol spent per day. Also about water consumerism in UAE which the
calculations shows that is they spend 550 liters of water per person every day.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the world natural resources is about to finish,
because of the high rating of productions per day. And by ending of some
resources would hurt us and hurt the animals, what we need is to share
productions with each other and stop disposal stuff so we keep our air clean
and healthy.
